Freelancer invoice examples

Use the invoice structure that matches the work: a project invoice, an itemized hourly invoice, or a recurring retainer invoice.

Fixed-price project with a milestone deposit

Hourly services with rate, quantity, and period

Monthly retainer with recurring billing

Reimbursable expenses, materials, and travel costs

Example: fixed-price design project

Brand identity project — 50% project deposit: $1,500. Remaining balance due on delivery: $1,500. Include the discovery, concept, revision, and final-delivery milestones so the client understands when each payment is expected.

Example: hourly consulting invoice

Consulting — 8 hours at $125/hour: $1,000. Add the service period and a short description of the work. If expenses are billable, list them separately instead of hiding them inside the hourly total.

Example: monthly retainer invoice

Monthly content strategy retainer — July 1–31: $2,000. State the services included and the date the next invoice will be created. Recurring billing can remove the repetitive monthly setup once the arrangement is established.
